Hi there everyone! With the release of Kingdom Hearts III looming ever closer, I thought I’d share with all of you my top ten favorite worlds that you can visit in the games. This is my personal list, so this is just my opinion on what worlds I like.
#10: 100 Acre Wood – KH & KHII
I put 100 Acre Wood as my number ten because it holds a little special place in my heart, just like it does with Sora😉. Having grown up watching Winnie the Pooh, I was overjoyed to have a chance to hang out with Pooh Bear, Piglet, Rabbit, and company. All of their personalities were on point and it actually felt like being right there next to them. The colors of the landscape and the fact that the storybook was incorporated into the world design was pretty amazing.
Even with this world not having an effect on the main storyline for the first or second Kingdom Hearts games, the mini-games, especially in the second game, were quite fun and simple enough that doing them over to get the records and trophies didn’t bother too much like it did on some of the mini-games that were present in the actual storyline.
#9: Enchanted Domain – BBS
Next up is the Enchanted Domain from Birth By Sleep. While I really enjoyed all of the worlds that appeared in this prequel, I really enjoyed exploring Maleficent’s world. The atmosphere and music all fit very well with the sadness that appears in that world. I was also really excited to see where Maleficent finally came from, that she didn’t just appear out of nowhere in Hollow Bastion/Radiant Garden, but actually came from another world.
This world was also where, as Ventus, I ran into rare Unversed for the first time. With all of the other worlds, it was always up to chance on where I would run into those rare little Unversed, Prize Pods, and able to collect ice cream ingredients for Huey, Dewey, and Louie. This world also holds a special place in my heart for when I first played BBS, because this is the first time that I, again as Ventus, heard about Terra and his questionable actions and started to put pieces into place on why Terra seemed very familiar to me. I won’t actually say here, I don’t want to spoil too much from these games😉.
#8: The Grid/Space Paranoids – DDD & KHII
Okay, know that these are named differently so some people might see them as separate worlds, however, I am grouping them together as one since both deal with Tron and characters from his world. I really enjoyed these worlds and their layout because I was always interested in watching the Tron series and Space Paranoids heightened that interest. So by the time Dream Drop Distance was released, I had seen both the original Tron and Tron Legacy. So, when I was playing Sora in DDD and was transported to The Grid, I was ecstatic and already felt a connection to the characters as Sora tried to locate Tron.
Another reason why this is number 8 on my list is the fact that we got world specific Heartless and an amazing looking Keyblade and outfit for Sora in KHII & DDD and for Riku in DDD. The music fit the world perfectly and I enjoyed racing on the Light Cycle in Space Paranoids. It gave a nice change of pace from just smashing things with a Keyblade. I also can’t help but think that Tron is just the most precious thing in all the worlds😉.
#7: Agrabah – KH, KHII, Chain of Memories, Recoded, & 258/2 Days
Now, here is a world that I consider one of the classic worlds in the Kingdom Hearts series. This world has been very consistent with mechanics and layout from game to game. Chain of Memories has a slightly different layout, mainly because Sora visits that ‘world’ inside of the castle, but I’m still counting that as a ‘world’ so to speak.
There is so much to see and do in Agrabah and the music helps give off that vibe that I got while watching the movie was why I fell in love with this world. It also helps that one of my most beloved Disney character, Genie, lives there. And the fact that as Sora, I get to ride around on Carpet in KHII, definitely scores this world some points. Aladdin also provides Sora’s group with great support, being a rather hard hitter, so I am always willing to trade out Donald for Aladdin for more support since Heartless seem to enjoy swarming Sora when he attempts to leave Agrabah to travel to the Cave of Wonders.
#6: Olympus Coliseum: Recoded, KH, KHII, & BBS
Up next is another world I consider to be one of the classics. Olympus Coliseum has been a part of the Kingdom Hearts series since the first game and one that I am always excited to visit. I mean, how often is it that you get to fight alongside one of Disney’s strongest heroes? And the fact that Hades is just as sassy as he is in the movie has me ranking this world as number six on my list. Now, I would have ranked this further down on my list if it wasn’t for the fact that I constantly got lost while traveling through the Underworld to find Hades’s room, but that is one of my only complaints about this world. I enjoy the fact that in each game that Olympus Coliseum (outside of Chain of Memories) provides a nice break from defeating Heartless and Unversed to just fight and see how skilled you have become as Sora, Ventus, or whomever you chose to play as.
Another reason why I absolutely love this world is the fact that Hades seems to be one of the only villains who understands how to get Sora to use the Keyblade in the way he wants and while he still wants the Keyblade, Hades is willing to take advantage of it in the only way he can at that time. He is also one of the only villains that I can see Sora truly having a difficult time with if the two ever had to fight solo. And because I love this world so much, I really, really hope it appears in KHIII and hopefully, there is a way for Sora to actually meet Zeus and all the other gods and goddesses with Hercules. I think that would just be amazing, while also keeping the Underworld as an option to explore.
#5: Port Royal – KHII
For number five, I have chosen Port Royal. Some of it has to do with the fact that I love Will, Elizabeth, and Jack so much and the other part of me loves it for the fact that Sora comments on how strange the world looks because it’s supposed to look more realistic rather than animated like all of the other worlds. And, let me tell you, it took me years to realize that XD.
Another reason that I put this world as number five on my list is because of how excited Sora is to meet real pirates and how he quickly learns that being a pirate isn’t as cracked up as he thought it was going to be. I like how this shows growth in Sora’s character and, to me, Sora seems to have some of the most growth in this world before he reaches The World That Never Was. And, unlike all the other worlds that Sora visits, Port Royal is very dark and dreary compared to the bright and colorful worlds of places such as Disney Castle and Agrabah. I really enjoy the contrast that this world provides and really hope to see this world in KHIII.
#4: Land of the Dragons: KHII
Okay, so I have to admit, I have a little bias when it comes to this world. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies and she is my favorite Disney princess, even though she isn’t actually a princess but a warrior, but I digress. The entire fact that I get to hang out with Mulan and Mushu whenever I visit that world as Sora is why this world is number one. (I also find it hilarious that Goofy can see through Mulan’s disguise while both Sora and Donald have absolutely no idea.)
It is also great to see how Mulan grew and became more confident while fighting alongside Sora and company because it feels like I got to help my favorite Disney character grow and become more comfortable with herself. I know that it was actually Sora, but hey, by extension, I am Sora, so I think I’m allowed to have this one small victory😉.
#3: Twilight Town: KHII
Ah, Twilight Town. This is the very first world that I visited as Sora in the Kingdom Hearts series which is because I played KHII before playing KH, with only the manga being my sole connection to the first Kingdom Hearts game. So, this world as a whole is very special to me. I first met Roxas in this world, I got to see just how wickedly cool Mickey Mouse is in the series, I had a lot of first experiences with this series through this single world. And, while I was rather confused about who some of these characters were, I grew to love them.
There is also so much to do in Twilight Town! One of my favorite minigames is delivering mail to everyone to earn a little more munny. Mainly, because you have to give a freaking bird mail! It’s the best! And the whole world is very beautiful to look at, the entire place giving me a very Final Fantasy vibe. I also really like that it is one of the few worlds in KHII where all Sora fights are Nobodies. It gives a nice break from fighting the Heartless and is where Sora/Roxas begin the game and when Sora makes it back, it is near the end of the game. There are so many emotions that I feel whenever I enter that world as Sora that it is hard for this world to not be on my list of favorites.
#2: Beast’s Castle: KHII
Much like Land of the Dragon, there is some bias as to why I have this on my list. I have always loved Beauty and the Beast and gaining the ability to actually explore Beast’s home had me to the moon with excitement. I was just as excited as Sora to see the Beast and thanks to the manga, I at least knew that the Beast and Sora had history together. The world, while not one of the biggest that Sora is able to explore, still had a lot of areas to explore and exploring the west wing while knowing that it’s forbidden is very thrilling. And the fact that Sora and Beast team up once more and Sora trying to let out a roar just like the Beast during their special attack kills me XD.
Much like Port Royal, Beast’s Castle has a darker coloration than most of the other worlds. There are places in Beast’s Castle where it is bright and colorful, but to me, I feel like that the contrasts in colors represent both Belle and Beast. The color represents Belle and her faith that deep inside the Beast’s heart is something good. The darker colors represent the Beast and his doubt that he holds within himself. I find this amazing and the world as a whole, holds a much deeper meaning. I love when a world holds more meaning to it than just housing some of my favorite Disney characters. It shows just how important these characters are to their world.
#1: Radiant Garden/Hollow Bastion – BBS, KH, KHII, Recoded, & Chain of Memories
And now for my number one favorite world. Hollow Bastion, aka Radiant Garden. This world holds so much history with the Kingdom Hearts series. Ventus, Terra, and Aqua visited this world while traveling around in Birth By Sleep, this is where Sora finally finds Riku and Kairi in the first game, and the home of Leon, Yuffie, Aerith, and Cid in KHII. Sora meets so many different characters when he travels to Radiant Garden and I can’t help but love how beautifully crafted this world is. It feels so vast even though it is quite limited on where you can go, but compared to some of the other worlds, it is one of the biggest worlds that you can explore. This world’s connection to the Heartless and the elusive Kingdom Hearts that Ansem attempts to locate and learn more about. And I can’t help but want to learn more about this world. It’s why Radiant Garden is my favorite and most visited world in the Kingdom Hearts series.
Of all the original and classic worlds from the first Kingdom Hearts game, I am deeply hoping that Radiant Garden appears in Kingdom Hearts III. There is just so much that I want to learn about this world, places that I hope we can visit. One place being Maleficent’s castle down past Crystal Fissure. I also can’t wait to see just how much Radiant Garden has been rebuilt by the Hollow Bastion Restoration Committee, or should we say: Radiant Garden Restoration Committee😉. Will it look similar to how Ven, Terra, and Aqua last saw it? Or will Leon and crew attempt to mix the old Radiant Garden with new and up-to-date technology that Cid has created? There is just so much to this world that I can’t help but to love all of it.
So that is my top ten favorite Kingdom Hearts worlds. I know that I don’t have a lot of worlds from the game, Dream Drop Distance, and don’t get me wrong there are many worlds in that game that I absolutely love, but many of them are only present in that game and for anyone who has yet to play it, I don’t want to spoil some of the awesome worlds that are available. I also know that there are a lot of worlds from Kingdom Hearts II but that’s because it is my favorite game and the first game I ever played in the series. Those worlds hold a very special place in my heart. Now I do have other worlds that I enjoy visiting in the KH series, but these are the ones that, if I could, I would want to physically visit if I could enter the games. Are any of these your favorite worlds as well? Comment below and let me know what your favorite world is or what your top ten worlds are from the series. Thanks for joining me and I’ll see ya real soon!
